How Marplan works. Marplan is a long standing, safe and effective drug for patients who suffer from clinical depression. People who have not responded to other classes of anti-depressant medications may do better on Marplan, and there is a good reason for that:
Marplan works by elevating levels of brain chemicals, neurotransmitters, which at reduced levels can cause depression. By blocking the action of an enzyme called monoamine oxidase, Marplan works differently than the commonly-known ‘SSRI drugs’, which selectively raise the level of one neurotransmitter.
